The Pittsburgh School District is the largest in Allegheny County, with 93 public schools serving approximately 38,000 pupils throughout Pittsburgh and Mt. Oliver. Employing approximately 5,200 people, its facilities include 10 high schools (Grades 9-12), two alternative programs, 17 middle schools (Grades 6-8), 53 elementary schools (Grades K-5), four special use schools and one adult education school. Assignments to elementary, middle and high schools are based on the address of the child's legal residence.
School District policy is set by nine members of the Board of Education elected by district. Board members meet in legislative session once a month to conduct official business. The Board hears public comment and discussion on proposed policy and other business once every month throughout the school year at a regularly scheduled public hearing.
