Hiking Information
Basic Info:
The Tuscarora State Forest is comprised of more than 90,000 acres. Its location spans Cumberland, Franklin, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, and Perry counties.

Trails:
The Tuscarora Trail is the northern portion of an extensive 220-mile bypass route of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia. Approximately 23 miles of this hiking trail crosses the Tuscarora State Forest.

The 105-mile Tuscarora Trail in Pennsylvania and Maryland connects to the Big Blue Trail that starts in northern Virginia. The Tuscarora Trail runs parallel to the Appalachian Trail and junctions with it and the Darlington Trail near Deans Gap, north of Carlisle. The Tuscarora Trail is marked with rectangular blue blaze marks painted on trees.

Tunnel Trail:
• 1 mile
Leads to the ruins of two narrow-gauge railroads. A display case containing information about those railroads is located at the trailhead in Big Spring State Park.

Iron Horse Trail:
10-mile loop hiking trail between Big Spring State Park and the Eby Cemetery along PA Route 274. This trail follows the grade of the Perry Lumber Company and the Path Valley railroads.

An additional 167 miles of short, local hiking trails are located throughout the Tuscarora. The majority of these trails have signs at the starting and terminal points.

Other Items Offered:
Boating, fishing, hunting, picnic areas. Winter activities include skiing and snowmobiling.
